Hyukjae eomma: Here was the material aspect of being a trainee. You definitely had to go and learn things outside of training especially music and acting lessons. But, we didn’t have enough means to support that, things like piano lessons and music classes. He needed to do all those things, so it was worrying because we could not give it to him. But not even once did he show his resentment or unhappiness about it and was always just thankful for whatever small things we could give.

Hyukjae appa (Lee Kanghyeon): Junsu who is doing activities with DBSK right now, actually used to train together with Hyukjae and entered the same company in order to keep their promise to debut together. It was about three years? Junsu debuted first with a group called DBSK. When we saw that Hyukjae couldn’t debut together at that time, we could only wonder, “Eh? Why is it like?” (IDK about this translation, it seems a bit faulty) because he didn’t want to tell us. We only found out that much later, that he was hurting a lot at that time. Even though it was so difficult for him, but there was no way. We could have known because he never showed it at all when he was home. He’s really a thoughtful and kind kid, to that extent. Later, after we talked about it, we found out that at that time more than a month, he didn’t speak at all and just cried silently.

Hyukjae: We spent a really long time together as trainees, even compared to other singers out there, to be honest. For me, I spent about 5 to 6 close years as a trainee, but during spent training, other friends who trained with us, noonas and hyungs from the same company, many of them debuted ahead of me. So there were times I was envious of them. When I went to school, my classmates would ask, “When on earth are you going to debut?” “Are you really going to debut?” Other meaner friends would ask, “Are you sure you are not lying to us, when in truth the company already kicked you out?” There were friends who would say things like that.

Although it was very difficult for me, I told myself that this was a natural course of the road to every singer, and that it wasn’t just me who was receiving such words and told myself to bear with it, because it is a process for all of us to endure, the other trainees as well. Honestly speaking, I never once thought of giving up.
